Geocaching

We’ve found something to keep us active during the winter months: geocaching. Basically you try to find ‘treasure’ that other people have hidden using latitude and longitude co-ordinates given by the person who has hidden the cache.  (Or you can use a clue if you need it). Once there you can sign a logbook to let others know you’ve found the cache, and you can also take or place little ‘trinkets’ - hence the ‘treasure’ :)  This works best with a GPS receiver, although some of the caches still take a bit of looking around even when you have the exact co-ordinates.

With over 200 of them within seven miles of where we live, we should be kept busy for a few weekends, and get us going to places we wouldn’t otherwise have gone to.

If my life was a movie

To make it (almost) 3 posts in 3 days, here’s something I’ve seen on a few other blogs recently.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool!

Opening Credits: Everlasting Love - Robert Knight (from 1974 compilation)
Waking Up: Will You Fall For Me - Delta Goodrem (from ‘Innocent Eyes’)
First Day At School: Next Love - Hepburn (from ‘Hepburn’)
Falling in Love: Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - The Doors (from ‘The Very Best Of’)
Fight Song: Rehab - Amy Winehouse (from Top 40 compilation 17/03/07)
Prom: Back Door Man - The Doors (from ‘The Very Best Of’)
Life: Heaven Up Here - Kelley Stoltz (from ‘Q Covered - The Eighties’)
Mental Breakdown: Polkarama - Weird Al Yankovic (from ‘Straight Outta Lynwood’)
Driving: Hang On In There Baby - Johnny Bristol (from 1974 compilation)
Flashback: Fragile - Sting (from ‘Fields Of Gold - The Best Of’)
Getting Back Together: La Mer - Sarah Brightman (from ‘Dive’)
Wedding: What You Waitin’ For - Gwen Stefani (from ‘Radio 1s Live Lounge’)
Birth Of Child: Slide - Dido (from ‘No Angel’)
Final Battle: Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting - Elton John (from ‘Rocket Man - The Definitive Collection’)
Death Scene: Push The Button - Orson (from ‘Radio 1s Live Lounge’)
Rememberance Song: Wake Me Up - Norah Jones (from ‘Not Too Late’)
End Credits: Big Boy On A Saturday Night (from ‘Titanic Days’)

Some strange matches, and even stranger that although my iPod has about 2900 songs to choose from it picks songs from the same album a few times…

Rant for today

What is it with people that play music through their mobile phones on buses?  A mobile phone speaker is not one of the best, so why do they choose to inflict their tinny music on everyone else on the bus?

And it’s usually hip-hop type music where you can’t understand the lyrics anyway - even if you could hear them properly!

New site, new theme

I seem to have gone through a few themes in the last few days, but I’ve settled on this one. Still a few more tweaks to be made, but it’s getting there. :)

Bonfire night

Bonfire night has passed for another year, where probably millions of fireworks - and pounds - have literally gone up in smoke.  I got to thinking (just a little bit) about the whole thing a bit more.  It seems funny that we celebrate someone who tried to blow up Parliament.  There is a potted history on Wikipedia, and reading it, another odd thing is all the ‘Penny for the guy’ that is associated with Guy Fawkes.   Odd because the guy gets thrown on the fire, when in fact Guy Fawkes was hanged, drawn and quartered, after being tortured.

Another oddity is that we celebrate with fireworks, which I suppose is symbolic for the gunpowder exploding, which again never happened.  So in effect we are finishing off each year what Guy Fawkes didn’t manage.

400-ish years later there’s a similar parallel in Nelson Mandela - someone who plotted to blow up the Parliament building in South Africa, and is now celebrated not just in South Africa, but all over the world.

It’s back

The blog is back - in case I have anything to say.  Over the last few months I’ve seen and heard things but not been able to post about them. So, now I will be able to again :)

NASA Moon landings

We now have conclusive proof that the moon landings were fake… the last photo is the clincher.

New Google Blogsearch

As you no doubt know by now, Google have launched a Blog search facility. So if you want to see what other people are saying about you in their blogs, look no further. :-)

It looks like Google is becoming a bit Microsoft-y, having their fingers in all sorts of pies. Think of something popular online, and Google go after it. (I wonder how long it will take until they get into trouble with the Department of Justice as well… Technorati have been doing this for much longer though, being able to return lots more entries - Google can only return results from June 2005 onwards.
