OK, as a ‘game’, I will be changing the banner of the blog to a snippet of a lyric. The song has been in the charts or is very popular, so there won’t be any obscure songs - saying that there’s almost 32,000 songs to choose from!! As you guess them I’ll think of another one, so start thinking. Just add a comment to this post and I’ll let you know if you’re correct… So - an easy one to start with! NOTE: I’ve now moved these to a page, so that I can carry on posting normally. You can make any guesses on this page.

You\'re Beautiful [CD 1]

Back to Bedlam

It’s no change at the top on both the singles and albums charts this week. In a reversal of normal trends anywhere else, both James Blunt’s singles and albums manage to increase their sales, which for the single is quite remarkable as this is now the seventh week in a row that sales have increased. The album has managed an almost similar rise, but is not as spectacular seeing as the album was originally released in October of last year.

Heather Small’s Proud is being touted as the song for the London Olympics in 2012, but I doubt it would be round for another 7 years and then make it all the way to the top. I would think they mean the London Olympic bid. I’ve read elsewhere that William Hill have started taking bets for the #1 song at the time of the Olympics, but I would think that it’s likely to be someone that isn’t around yet, and possibly even a new genre of music that isn’t even around yet.

On the albums chart James Blunt is able to fend off the advances of Michael Jackson, who releases another of his compilation albums. This means there has been no new songs from Michael Jackson for a while, with the last 3 albums released being Hits compilations of some sort. Other than that, there are no major new entries in the album chart this week, in a reasonably quiet week.

Well, after 6 years of number crunching SETI units, I’ve finally made it into the top 1% of all users. You can see the full stats on my SETI page. Overall, out of 5.4 million other people I think it’s quite an achievement - especially since the first thousand were done on an old computer which took about 80 hours a unit, rather than the 8-10 hours the current computers manage.

Yes, it’s a bit early…

From moon.google.com

“In honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969, we’ve added some NASA imagery to the Google Maps interface to help you pay your own visit to our celestial neighbor. Happy lunar surfing.”

Go and investigate the landing sites, and zoom in as far as you can :-)

You\'re Beautiful [CD 1]

Back to Bedlam

This week sees James Blunt atop both the singles and the albums chart - neither of which are the result of a new entry. In both cases the records have climbed to the top spot, with the album reaching top last week. In the case of the single, it has taken 7 weeks to reach the summit. In a time when most singles enter high and then drop, this move is unusual - especially after 7 weeks.

The widely expected #1 was Elton John’s Electricity, and after much talk about Elton John knocking himself off the top spot, in the end the song could only reach #4. Charlotte Church slips by one place to #5, and this song has stayed lionger than I wouuld have thought (liked?), as I expected it to debut high and then plummet - as is the norm.

It may be the effect of downloads being counted on the chart, but there don’t seem to be a many new entries higher up. Most of the new entries this week cluster around #26 to #35. It will be interesting to see if any of these manage to climb a few places.

For the second week, the albums chart has a low number of new entries - this week only two in the top 75 - and this correspondingly means that albums sales suffered and are down 17% on last week, which was already a quiet week. A lot of the Live8 re-entries drop out and those that were in the chart the week before last make a return. Only The Magic Numbers are able to make a considerable climb up the chart (up 15 - #39 to #24) Charlotte Church enteres at #5, so it is possible that now the album is released, the single will start falling…

Not a joke as such, but a funny web site.

www.rathergood.com

You will probably have seen this guy’s work on the Maestro and Crusha adverts on television. My current favourite is ‘We Like The Moon’, but there’s loads more to choose from. He seems to have a particular liking for cats for some reason…

BTW - not work safe :-)

Ghetto Gospel

Back to Bedlam

2Pac’s Ghetto Gospel remains at #1 for another week, beating Mariah Carey by only 392 copies, and James Blunt stays at #3 for the third week running, increasing his sales yet again. However, there are some odder feats than this on this weeks singles chart - mainly the result of the Live8 concerts last week. 11 songs go up and there are 7 re-entries. The last time 11 songs went up was in March 2003, but that time there was only 1 re-entry.

Most impressive of these climbers is Razorlight’s Somewhere Else which manages to climb 31 places (61-30). The last time this happened was in 1992 when To Be With You from Mr Big climbed from 52 to 21. (For an exact match of 61-30 you need to go back to 1980 with The Undertones’ Wednesday Week). Both of these were before the current trend of entering high then dropping. Razorlight’s move has been mainly attributed to the Live8 concerts, and this effect is even more noticable on the album chart.

On the album front, James Blunt climbs to #1, the first time since the album was released nine months ago, and outsells Coldplay by 13,000 copies. Jeff Wayne’s version of The War Of The Worlds is still in the top 10, being its 260th week on the chart. Sales of this album are no doubt fuelled by the release of the new Steven Spielberg film version, and also possibly due to a new generation ‘discovering’ the album.

Most of the 16 albums going up this week were by artists who appeared at the various Live8 concerts, as were most of the re-entries in the lower end of the chart. Live8’s effect on album sales was hindered slightly by the bombings in London on Thursday, but nevertheless many artists on the Live8 bill were able to get re-entries of their older albums. The main example of this is Pink Floyd, who manage to get 4 albums in the chart (the same number as U2). The Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon albums notches up its 365th week. Older albums The Wall, and Wish You Were Here also get a look in at the lower end of the chart, with the Echoes Greatest Hits compilation re-entering at #19, after a 176 week gap.

Only bother reading if you can read and understand Afrikaans. I have seen an English version of this, but it’s just as good in Afrikaans….
